CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The journey for Games-time volunteers starts February 12, 2008. That's when the volunteer application process begins for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. There will be several events held across Canada to mark the occasion.

Medical Service volunteers will be required in the following disciplines:

  • Medical Specialties (i.e. Emergency, Sports Medicine, Internal, etc)
  • Surgical Specialties (i.e. Orthopaedics, General, Vascular, etc)
  • Other Specialties (i.e. Dentistry, Optometry, Pharmacy, etc)
  • First Response (i.e. Paramedics, Ski Patrol, First Aiders, etc)
  • Therapy (i.e. Physiotherapy, Athletic Therapy, Massage Therapy, etc)
  • Technical Specialists (i.e. Radiography, Lab, Dental Assistant, etc) For Medical Imaging, the technologists are needed in DR, CT, US and MR. The technologist must be either a CAMRT or CSDMS member.

We're looking for volunteers who are positive, enthusiastic, and have great interpersonal skills and clinical abilities. Here are some other things to consider before deciding if this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is right for you:

  • We're looking for volunteers who are available before, during and after the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. We encourage everyone to apply, but please keep in mind that the more time and flexibility you have, the more opportunities there may be for you to get involved.
  • With an expected 25,000 volunteers, accommodation is a major consideration. Although pre-arranged accommodation is not a pre-requisite, we would strongly recommend it.
  • You must be 19 years old on or before September 1, 2008 to apply for a volunteer role.
  • We'll be using electronic communication (i.e. the volunteer website, e-mail etc.) to pass along important information. You'll need your own valid e-mail address and access to the Internet.
  • You must complete and pass an RCMP background check, and any other relevant security clearances to be considered for a volunteer role.
  • We're also looking for volunteers with a good command of English, customer service skills and basic computer knowledge.
  • Although logistics have not yet been worked out, you can expect to work 10-14 shifts.

You can get more information about the volunteer requirements, or apply online at www.vancouver2010.com or www.workopolis.com starting February 12th, 2008. It is recommended that you sign up as soon as possible. Phone screens for candidates will start April 2008. In-person interviews and orientation will start later in 2008. Candidates will be selected shortly after in-person interviews. Job-specific training and uniform and accreditation will take place in 2009. Further information and updates will be provided to candidates through the volunteer website 'On Your Mark'.

This is a terrific opportunity to be a part of one of the greatest events that our country has ever hosted. The memories will surely last a lifetime.
